Sponsor A Child

By becoming a child sponsor you will provide a child with the financial support to stop them from working on the street and enable them to attend normal school.

‘Why don’t these children already attend a government school?’

The children that attend Aschiana are providing an income for their families. Many of these children have lost one or both of their parents, and have become the main income earner for the family. The work that they do on the streets such as shoe polishing, selling matches, cigarettes and chewing gum is often menial in nature and due to the very low income it produces, on average 2000 Afghanis (USD 26) a month it requires the children to work extremely long hours. With the responsibility of earning the families income these children do not have time to attend normal school.

How much does it cost?

It will cost you USD 30 per month (including USD 5 as administrative cost).

Aschiana request that you sponsor a child for one year in advance, USD 360. This secures the child’s sponsor for a year and ensures the money you deposit into Aschiana’s bank account is not lost in bank fees and charges.

Where is my sponsorship dollar going?

The money goes directly to the child. Each month the child will receive USD 25. This amount is to supplement the money they would have otherwise earned on the street.

This money will provide the essential items that are needed to attend school; food, clothing, stationery and necessary hygiene materials such as soap, toothpaste and toothbrush etc.

When you sponsor a child you will receive a school report twice a year.

Your commitment to a child

Aschiana ask that you think seriously before sponsoring a child. Child sponsorship gives a child a chance to education. If you decide to discontinue sponsorship it means that the child no longer has the financial support to continue their education and will be forced to return onto the street.

It is for this reason that Aschiana ask that you think of making a commitment to a child for a minimum of three years. This ensures that the children in the sponsorship program receive consistent schooling that follows through year to year.

We also understand that there are circumstances that may force you to cease sponsorship. Should this situation arise we encourage you to find someone to take over your sponsorship.

Aschiana believes that every child has a right to education and therefore we encourage sponsorship of all ages.

How is the child’s progress monitored?

Aschiana has close to 25years’ experience working with children and their families. Regular support to both the child and family is seen as essential for the success of this program.

A full time social worker is dedicated to the child sponsorship program. She works closely with the child, their family and the school. Attendance records are monitored and progress reports given regularly to ensure the child is participating in schooling daily.

How is a child selected for child sponsorship?

The children most in need are selected for the sponsorship program. These are children who are orphaned and living with extended family, children with a father that has a handicap or children with a handicap themselves.
